May 22nd, 2009

The human mind is capable of coming up with the strangest ideas. The finished product never tells us how difficult it was to construct the same. This is especially true in case of construction of structures. You may have to weld joints at the most unlikely places. This cannot be avoided as these joints, in most cases, are the ones that hold the entire structure firmly in its foundation.

Now you cannot refuse jobs because it requires performing welding operations in uncomfortable positions, can you? The smart way out is to make preparations beforehand and make the job as uncomfortable as possible.

Safety is a very important factor as far as welding and other such activities are concerned. Safety becomes every more important where you are performing welding at a height or where you are performing overhead welding using a stick welder.

The first and most important safety accessory that you need is a welding helmet. This becomes even more important when you are performing overhead welding. The sparks are going to rain down and your hair and head will be burned to a frazzle if you do not use protection of a welding helmet.

Further, there always is the possibility of a fall when performing overhead welding. These accidents can take place suddenly and the onus is upon you to protect yourself from the fall. A good quality welding helmet will you remain safe from not just the sparks but also from the impact of a fall.

Apart from the welding helmet, you will need good quality clothing accessories to ensure your arms; legs and torso do not suffer from any burns. Wearing loose clothing is a strict no-no as a stray spark may enter your clothes and singe your body. The sensation of a sudden burn inside your clothes on your chest or neck can be very disconcerting. It is common for individuals to lose balance and fall off their perch when this happens. Wearing a welding helmet will ensure only minimum damage takes place.

Many experts suggest that an individual undertaking overhead welding must wear a leather jacket over a thick cloth like denim. This ensures that the skin is totally safe from the sparks.

Pay special attention to the quality of glasses used during overhead welding. This may seem like a small point but make sure the welding helmet as well as the glass fit you comfortably. Many a times, the size of the glasses prevents the welding helmet from fitting perfectly. Do not compromise on comfort or fit when undertaking hazardous tasks.
