TIG welding uses gas like argon or helium to protect the welding area from atmospheric gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. Work pieces that have to be joined are cleaned to remove dirt, grease and other oxides chemically to obtain a sound weld.
Characteristics of TIG Welding:
- Applied in thin materials
- No slag or spatter
- Used in Shielding gas like Argon, Helium etc
- Uses non consumable tungsten electrode
Advantages
- Suitable for thin metals
- No flug is used
- Strong joints are obtained
Disadvantages:
- It is the most difficult process when compared to others.
- Process is slow
- Not suitable for thick metals
- Skilled operator is required
Applications:
TIG welding can weld stainless steel and non-ferrous materials. This type of welding is mostly used in Aerospace industry, Refrigerators, Air conditioners and chemical plants.
