Important Points on Training and Other Qualifications of Welding

July 27th, 2009

Many people want to become welders but are confused as where to start. If a person wants to become a welder he has to go in for a training that ranges from a few weeks of school or on-the-job training for low skilled positions to several years of combined school and on-the-job training for highly skilled jobs.

Where to take education and training: Welding training can be taken in high schools and in post secondary institutions like community colleges, private welding schools. Even U.S. Armed forces operate welding schools. Most of the employers hire workers who have already gone through the formal training. If a person does other courses like blueprint reading, shop mathematics, mechanical drawing, physics, chemistry and metallurgy or electricity, computers it can help him in this profession. A welding operator has to inspect welding equipments and welding process at regular intervals, so companies generally prefer workers who have a background in welding.

If an employer wants to hire a welder for certain positions which require specific skills he should have a certificate. American welding society certification courses are offered in many welding schools. For welding a worker should have good eyesight, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination. They should be able to work for longer period of time.
