When you look at a typical welding power supply unit, they look pretty normal and you might not think too much of them. But, in fact it took an enormous amount of engineering and scientific study to actually get them where they are today. They are given the acronym IGBT, which stands for; insulate gate bipolar transistor. This is a semiconductor device that is know for its ability to switch really fast. It is also known for its high efficiency and can be used in several of your household appliances.

This conductor may be found in electric cars, multi speed refrigerators and some high tech stereos. They are found in some of the newer energy efficient cars like the Prius or some of the other hybrids that are on the road today.

The way the generally work is that they, are able to have extremely high amounts of current along with voltage saturation that is low. They have a three-terminal power structure consisting of ; a bipolar transistor, a gate, and a power transistor. They are all combined within this mechanism harnessing and controlling vast amounts of energy within the apparatus.

This is the power structure within the IGBT Welding machines. This power supply unit is one that will control power stages using the fast switches of the IGBT. It most oftentimes will come equipped with a microprocessor and software that increases its usability and effectiveness. They have an interface that usually has a digital display and are highly user friendly. These digital displays are state of the art for the welder and their processes.

This power supply unit can harness and provide the electricity for several different types of welding processes. You can weld using TIG welding or Tungsten Inert Gas welding process or the MMA or Manual Metal Arc welding procedure. Not only do you have options in processes for welding, but also in the types of current or amperage, that you need. You can actually purchase a AC/DC or Alternating/Direct current TIG welding machine. The different choices in current are great because they will allow you to be able to switch between welding types.

These machines can also be used to weld a variety in types of metals to work with. You can weld stainless steel or carbon steel. You can weld with other source materials like copper, as well.

They weigh between thirty-five to fifty-five pounds approximately. They come most times in portable models that will allow you flexibility in your work environment. You should be sure that your cables don’t run too long though, because this can be a hazard to the welder or someone near. They can run you close to one thousand dollars in cost, but you might find a bargain and get them a little cheaper.

If you want a machine that has the newest in power supply units, being that their design has only been around since the early eighties. You will want to look for the Digital IGBT Welding machine.
