Importance of Welding earth Connection

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Welding is the process wherein, two or more work pieces are joined together under high pressure and electricity with the help of a molten solution and certain welding tools. A certain specific welding technique is followed depending upon the type of materials that is to be joined together. These work pieces are mostly some kind of metal or alloy. Thus it is very clear that in order to create a strong joint between the work pieces, large heat energy and electricity along with precision is required to create a perfect weld.

The basic idea behind welding is a simple electric circuit where you attach the earth clamp to one end of the metal pieces being welded and then as you bring the electrode closer to that place of the metal, you would establish an arc.

Thus you need the earth as well as the electrode to touch the work which completes the basic circuit. This step in welding process is very significant because if the earth connection is not good enough it can affect your welding procedure and experience. You might get injured badly as well in case there are any short circuits during the welding execution. So grind the small area around the metal piece and then establish the earth connection to avoid further issues while welding.

Welding Apparels for your safety

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Welding procedure is an easy one to learn but quite hazardous to handle while performing. It is the duty of every welder to equip himself both technically as well as safely while performing the art of welding. Safety equipments are designed in such a manner that they mainly focus on areas of the body most vulnerable to the hazards. The heat and sparks during welding can damage eye sight, burn tissues, give you eye diseases etc and thus welding safety equipment majorly focuses on protecting the head, eyes, body, legs and feet. The safety equipment includes safety goggles, welding apparels and safety harnesses.

The apparels come in many forms and most common among them is the head gear for protection from flames. It drapes over the welders face and are quite flame retardant by nature. They are mostly made out of leather. Another form of apparel is the welding gloves which have to be worn during welding activities. They are made out of cowhide or deerskin or even heat resistance fiber glass.  Safety harnesses are used by welders for welding activities in the air and they protect us from falls. They include bib aprons and waist aprons.

How to get the right Welding Helmet?

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Choosing the best suitable welding helmet is as important as choosing the right electrode for your welder. When you are getting ready to wed, you will have to make sure that you are well equipped with all the safety gears and other precautionary stuffs available immediately when you need them. Though you are a practiced welder, you will have to take all necessary steps to take care of your eyes and face especially from the harmful fumes and gases.

You have hundreds of welding helmets to choose from, they vary from sizes, pricing and the level of protection that they give you. You will have to see the features of the helmet rather than seeing its rate. Never choose a helmet just because it is cheap. Always think about your safety and get the one that you will need.

The best out of the recent models are the auto-darkening welding helmets, you could read about their uses before you buy and then choose them. Auto darkening helmets gives you a liberty of wearing them on even when you are setting up the weld and hence your face and eyes are completely protect even in case of any accidental sparks coming out of the welder.

Safety while handling welding equipment

Monday, March 28th, 2011

When you are setting up a welding setup, you should make sure that you have safety equipment also ready. The most major accidents happen in welding because of the lack of safety equipment.  The process of welding is relatively simple but the risks that are associated with welding in terms of safety is high. There are always molten metal pieces flying around that could cause injuries. Also looking directly at the welding arc can lead to defects in vision as well as blindness. The following welding equipment is essential while welding.

Welding gloves- protects the hands from the arc as well as sparks. These gloves are also eclectically insulated to prevent from electrical shock.

Welding shield- protects the face from the arc and from sparks. Also the shield has a tinted glass attached through which the work is viewed. This prevents the damage to the eyes.

Insulated boots- This cuts of the body from acting as an earth so that the current does not flow.

A fire extinguisher should also be always kept at the work place to prevent any accidents.

Primary Electric Shock During Welding Process

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Just like any other works, welding also has its own probability where accidents happen. Most often accidents happen because of the improper precautionary steps taken by the welders or when it happened due to the instrument fault.

One of the accidents that happen during the process of welding is Electric shocks. The primary shock is a condition when the primary voltage shock – at 115 volts to as high as 600 volts passes through the victim’s body. This Electric shock is even dangerous than the much greater voltages.

A person can experience a primary shock if he happens to get in contact with touch a lead or other electrically hot element inside the welder. Especially when the body of the victim stays in contact with welder case or other grounded metal with the power to the welder. You can identify a grounding lead in the input power cable when the input power grounding lead has got green insulation or when it has got no insulation.

Factors to Consider Before Buying a Welding Helmet

Friday, January 14th, 2011

In the welding profession, one of the essential safety equipment for all welders is the helmet. The welders are exposed to the harmful UV rays, infrared and also intense sparks. The human eyes are a very sensitive part of the human body and need to be taken care well. As the welders eyes are exposed to such harmful radiations they need to get some kind of protection which comes via a welding helmet.

In the market today, there are various types of welding helmets available ranging from the non branded cheapest basic helmet to the expensive welding helmet boasting of a variety of features. While initially you would find that there is no difference between the appearance of both and some of you could have even been using the low quality welding helmets for a long period without any health issues. All of you must be aware that the health complications like cataract take time to form themselves and you might experience them only after years.

So to be on the safer side, choose an expensive helmet, don’t compromise on cost. Try out the helmet and ensure that you will be comfortable working with it, opt for light weight helmets which are made of plastic. Today most of the welding helmets are made of plastic; quality is what matters as some of the plastic helmets might get melted when exposed to intense heat. So always prefer a reputed brand rather than the cheap no name. Also check out factors like durability and whether it has feature like auto darkening to protect the eye.

Take Care of Burns That Might Occur During Welding:

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

Safety is very important that has to be considered at the time of welding. Whether it is a MIG, TIG, Stick, or any other technique of welding a welder must make sure to perform the weld with appropriate safety equipments and with suitable welding tools.

During the process of weld a welder may get injured in many ways. One of the most common injuries which every welder would have experienced is “burns”.

Burns are one of the most general and hazardous injuries that occur in the welding shop. Burns might occur through ultraviolet rays and if contacted with hot welding materials. The possibilities of getting infected are very high due to the dead tissue. Hence it is very important for a welder to get an appropriate medical treatment for the burn so as to reduce the chance of high infections.

In welding industry burns are divided into three classifications depending on the degree of the severity. They are

• First degree burns- skin in reddish color, tender and painful but it doesn’t involve any broken skin.

• Second degree burns- skin will be severely damaged which in turn results in formation of blisters and a possible break down in the skin.

• Third degree burns- surface of the skin and possibly the tissue below the skin below appears white or as charred. Since nerve endings get destroyed over here there would be no feeling in that particular area.
