How to Improve on Your Plasma Cutting Work?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Plasma cutters are easy to use which can increase in your efficiency, improve your cut quality and prolong the life of your equipment.

Some tips to improve your plasma cutting are:

  • Before starting the plasma cutting work read the owner’s manual properly.
  • Familiarize yourself with the safe and correct operation of your particular plasma cutter.
  • During long cuts, it is difficult to stop, clean and continue.
  • Before pulling the trigger just practice the movements so that you can make one continuous cut.
  • Use a drag shield if your plasma cutter is equipped with one.
  • Use the right tip for your amperage setting.
  • A lower amperage tip has a smaller orifice to maintain a narrower plasma stream at lower settings.

The faster your travel speeds, the cleaner your cut will be. When cutting thicker material, set the machine to full output and vary your travel speed. On thinner material, turn down the amperage and change to a lower amperage tip to maintain a narrow kerf.

Plasma Cutter Tips

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Plasma cutting is easy to learn and operate. Here are some of the tips that will help you increase your efficiency and increase the life of your plasma cutter.

After purchasing the right plasma cutter, the first step you should take is read the owner’s manual properly. Read the manual properly and keep it handy so you and other operators can reference it as needed.

Some other tips are as follows:

  1. Before using your plasma cutter, make sure that the power cord is in working condition and is plugged into the correct type of primary power supply. Some units like Auto-line™ technology, require power supply from 208 to 575 volts.
  2. See to it that there is proper air supply so that correct air flow and pressure enter the machine.
  3. Plasma cutters should have dry air.
  4. Connect the torch, if it’s not corrected already.
  5. All your consumables should be in place and that they are snug and secure
  6. Select the correct process.
  7. Turn the machine on.
  8. Check the air setting
  9. Set the output to the correct setting.

What Are Plasma Cutter Consumables?

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

The plasma cutter has the ability to cut steel and metals, just like any other welding process. But, they are not like any other welding procedure because they actually cut with plasma. The plasma is formed when high pressured gas shoots through the cutting torch.

The temperature of the gas is elevated to a point that it causes the gas to turn into plasma. This plasma is what they call the fourth state of matter and can be formed by using air, nitrogen, or oxygen.

The plasma cutter consumables are usually disintegrated once they are forced out of the nozzle of the cutting torch. Consumables are called that because they are consumed while being used with the torch, as they cut the metal. They are formed by the electrodes and other gases.

These gases will pass through the cutting torch at such a high rate of speed and heat that it will cut metal. As the gas is forced through the cutting torch, it will cause an electrical arc. This arc is the light that you usually see whenever you witness material being welded. This arc is caused by the electrode held within the cutting torch.
