Working Process of Arc Welding:

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Arc welding process is a process which consists of characteristics which is recognized for producing an electrical arc as it melts the metal. This kind of welding procedure has given its name as arc welding.

While performing the process of arc weld certain equipments will be required so that a welder is able to create an arc. In order to form arcs make sure that you have a supply of electricity. You can have an alternate supply of current (AC) or (DC) direct current power flowing from the electric supply unit. Such power is brought down to source material with the help of a torch.

Torch holds electrode which can be in form of consumable or non consumable. If the electrode is consumable, it will break easily when the heat from the power supply runs into it and at the same time as it heats up the material.

Electrode in arc welding will produce a light that will sparkle as it heats the source metal. Such electrode is known to be as a medium, this medium is fabricated by a material similar to the base material. At times this electrode is enclosed with flux. Flux is termed to be as a cleaning agent, its main purpose is to tidy up the source material while it is being welded.

A Note on ARC WELDER:

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

The process of arc welding will make use of electrical current so as to link an electrode and the welding object. This is done so as to melt the metal and generate the weld. The area which is going to be welded at times will be protected with the help of semi-insert gas or filler material.

The method of arc welding is widely used since it is less expensive. Apart from this it is first type of welding that most of the beginners learn.

Welders who perform this task of welding are known to be as arc welder(s). While preparing for a weld, make sure that you carry on this activity at outdoors. Furthermore, check the area of weld ensuring that there are no flammable articles lying nearby.

Arc welders have to protect themselves at the time of performing weld. Make use of protective equipments that are available in market which are specifically designed for such welding activities. Wearing of helmet is very important, if not it will lead to permanent eye damage.

If you are performing this kind of weld for the first time then it is wise to conduct this process under the supervision of skilled and knowledge able arc welders.

Uses and purpose of Metal Insert Gas welding:

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Generally welding machines are used for merging two or more materials together. The categories of welding machines are Arc welding, Mig welding, Spot welding, Tig welding and many more which are utilized for different aim. While welding you need lot of concentration and is a very hard job.

Mig welding is famous as feed welding. The full form of mig is metal insert gas. These are less expensive and consumes less time. Other welding machines consume lot of time and are more expensive than mig welding. The main reasons for using mig welding are:

• It is simple and gives high performance.
• The welding work is done in lesser time than other welding machines.
• It is capable of working with all kind of metals. For example aluminum and steel are commonly used.
• It is also known as gas metal arc welding because it can utilize any shielding gas for obtaining smooth finish.

The Mig welding are utilized by farmers, metal fabricator and house mechanics. Almost all farmers use this because it is affordable and saves time. The fabricators use this because they need to work on all metal.

Welding Should Be Done In A Safe Environment

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Fire, Injury Hazards

  • Arc rays produce ultraviolet and infrared rays that can burn eyes and skin. Exposed skin can be burned quickly by these rays. Welding helmets should be worn to protect the operators face and eyes when welding.
  • Safety glasses should also be worn.
  • Gloves and clothes should be flame-resistant. Always wear clothes that have tight woven material while welding. Gauntlet type leather gloves should be worn to protect the hands and wrists.
  • Do not keep matches or lighters in your pocket.
  • Always wear high-top leather shoes or boots to protect your foot.
  • Welding should not be done in areas that has flammable gases, vapors, liquids or dusty locations where explosions are possible.

Well Grounded

  • While working find a dry, non-flammable material to stand on.
  • Never use chains, wire ropes, cranes, hoists and elevators as grounding connectors.

Gas Systems

  • When using cylinders, securely chain them to a stationary, upright support or cart at all times.

Regulators

  • Remove a faulty regulator from service for repair
  • Do not repair a faulty regulator. It would be better if you send it at the manufacturer’s repair center, where it will be repaired based on manufacturer’s specifications

Hoses

  • Examine hose regularly for leaks, wear and loose connections.
  • Repair a leaky or worn hose by cutting out damaged area and splicing. Avoid using tape.

Arc Welding Safety

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

If welders take certain precautions they can avoid trouble.

Fumes and gas are silent Hazards:

Fumes and gases can cause major health problems if proper precautions are not taken. Gases that are used for shielding are non-toxic, but when released, they displace oxygen in breathing air. This can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and even death. Avoid gases and fumes and use ventilation equipment or respirator when necessary.

Some suggestions are as follows:

  • Make sure your head is out of fumes
  • Make sure that working area has natural ventilation
  • Read and understand the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Arc rays and sparks can injure eyes and burn skin

  • Protect your eyes and face by wearing welding helmet
  • Protect your body by wearing woolen fabrics and avoid cotton because it can catch fire easily.
  • Protect yourself and others from spatter
  • When welding, always wear safety glasses

Electric shock can kill:

  • Don’t lean on the work piece
  • Always wear dry, hole-free gloves.
  • Make sure that are the equipments are in proper working conditions.
  • Equipment should be turned off when not in use.

Other Hazards to Watch

  • Cylinders can explode if handled improperly.
  • Do not weld near fumes
  • Put on your ear plugs to avoid hearing problems.
