Applications and Limitations of Plasma Cutting Machines

October 7th, 2009

Plasma cutting machines contain a plasma torch with which metals of varying thickness can be cut. They produce ionized gases at high velocity. These gases conduct electricity from the torch. They melt the work piece and further the stream of gases aid in blowing away the molten metals.

Applications:

These machines are high speed performers and effective metal cutters. Their applications run wide. The plasma cutters are used;

  • To cut steel effectively
  • To cut non- ferrous materials whose thickness are less than one inch
  • As they are comparatively easier to operate than oxyfuel cutting.
  • To effective cut expanded metal
  • Easy to make non-linear cuts
  • To cut metals faster than conventional cutting methods

Limitations:

Plasma cutting machines have fewer limitations. Nevertheless a couple of disadvantages are listed below.

  • They require access to compressed air or electrical power
  • Cuts thicker sections slower than other cutting methods
