In gas welding, some hazards happen from fire and explosion. Explosion or fire can happen while using gas welding due to certain reasons:

1. If welder does not handle lighted blow pipe carefully, it can cause burns to him or other workers.

2. If blowpipe is used too close to combustible material.

3. Gas leakage from hoses, valves or other equipments.

4. Misuse of oxygen.

5. Backfires and flashbacks.

Lighted blowpipes are dangerous equipment which can burn the user badly. It can also injure other people and set flammable materials on fire. By following these precautionary steps you can prevent injury

• Always work in a safe location which is away from other people.

• Before starting your work, do wear welding helmet, protective clothes and gauntlets to protect yourself from fire.

• Clamp the work piece, do not hold it by hand.

• Once your work is over, switch off the blowpipe.

A View on Oxyacetylene Welding

The other name for the oxyacetylene welding is gas welding. The methodology which is applied over here to perform the task of weld is by mixing up of two gas elements. Mixing up of oxygen and acetylene in an equal proportion is required in this weld type.

Along with the mixture of these two gases the other elements which come into the contact are a welding torch which is hand-held or a gas blow pipe from which a sultry flame is generated where the temperature will be around 3,200 degree Celsius. Oxyacetylene Welding Overview

Oxyacetylene is also known as gas welding. The technique used is to mix two gas components namely oxygen and acetylene in an equal ratio and with the help of hand-held torch or a gas blow pipe a humid flame is produced with the temperature being around 3,200 degree Celsius. To adjust the excessive outflow of oxyacetylene flames change the volume of mixing ratio of two gases from oxygen to acetylene. The settings that are used for adjusting flame are neutral, oxidizing and carburizing.

As the ratio of mixing the gas is equal welding are generally done in neutral flame setting. In the second type of setting the outflow of oxidizing flame is obtained by increasing the flow rate of oxygen. And in the third setting carburizing flame is obtained by increasing the flow rate of acetylene.

As the amount of heat generated in Oxyacetylene welding process is high, it is best suited to weld the steel. The other gas components such as propane, hydrogen and coal gas are been used to join the lower melting points of non-ferrous metals and it can also be used for brazing and silver soldering. In this welding technique as the gas components are stored in steel cylinders at a specific pressure the equipments are friendly to handle and easy to use.

Things to Remember While You Use Oxy/Acetylene Torch

  • To check all the connections before firing the torch.
  • Don’t stand in front or behind of regulator when opening the cylinder valve.
  • Keep away your welding cylinder while you weld.
  • Turn off cylinders immediately when the torch flashes back.
  • Use a striker when you lighting a welding torch.
  • Never leave welding torch valves open.
  • Do not carry welding cylinders without the caps in place.
  • Close welding valves on empty cylinders.

What Are The Uses Cylinder Valves, Regulators and Torch Valves?

  • To increase the needle on the high pressure gauge, open the oxygen cylinder valve
    slowly. Adjust the oxygen pressure. Wrenches shall not be used on oxygen valves.
  • Acetylene cylinder valve shall be opened one and one quarter turns with the “T” handle wrench, which is supplied for the cylinder. This wrench shall be kept on the valve while equipment is in use. Regulate desired gas pressure, which shall never exceed 15 pounds per square inch.
  • Keep away each hose before lighting the torch.
  • Use only a friction lighter to lighting a torch.
  • Always stand to the side of regulators when opening valves.
  • Light acetylene, adjust flame, then adjust oxygen.

Gas Welding Torch Types

A gas welder fuses metals by mixing oxygen and fuel gas. There are controls provided in the welder over the proportions of the gases and amount that should be burnt up. The torches have two needle valves. One is used to control the amount of oxygen that has
to flow. Another valve helps us to control the flow of the fuel gas.

The torches are of two types;

  • Low pressure
  • Medium pressure

A low pressure torch is otherwise called as an injector torch. In this torch the fuel gas pressure is less than or equal to 1 pound per square inch. Oxygen pressure is anywhere between 10-40 pounds. This depends upon the size of the tip of the torch.

A medium pressure torch is otherwise called as a balanced pressure torch. Sometimes it is referred to as an equal pressure torch. This is primarily because the pressure of fuel gas and oxygen are equal.

Oxy-Fuel Welding: Safety Procedure

Welding of any type is a high risk job. Gas welding in particular requires more safety precautions. Here are some safety procedures that need to be taken care of while performing gas welding.

  • Always sport a helmet that covers your face thoroughly. Your face and eyes are
    the most important part of your body. They are most sensitive.
  • Always store oxygen and acetylene separately.
  • Make sure the equipment is chained tightly.
  • Check if the place you are about to work has a fire extinguisher in place.
  • Cylinders should be moved around and stored with their caps tightly on.
  • If you are using a cylinder, be attentive and remember to close the cylinder
    after use.
  • Apron, leather gloves and other protective gears should be worn at all times when performing gas welding.
  • Workplace should be always from dense human activity.
  • The place should be well ventilated.
  • Be alert and look for odors of fuel gases.
