Steps in setting up welding equipment

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Learning to set up welding equipment properly is the first step in arc welding. For ensuring safety, it would be better if you understand your equipment as well as the functions very thoroughly. This would also help you to produce a better product. To begin with the set up, you need to check all cables for damage and replace if necessary before starting any new welding project. This is to make the welding devoid of nicks or frays in the welding as it may lead to pose an electrical hazard.

Depending upon the type of welder you are using, plug your power source into the appropriate electrical outlet. The power provided from the arc welding source would be either an alternating current (AC) or a direct current (DC) using either a positive or negative electrode. The factor that determines the type of job would be the current and polarity that you choose.

The third step is to connect the electrode lead from the welder to the insulated electrode holder. Once you have connected the electrode, you need to place the proper electrode in the electrode clamp. As you guide it along the weld joint, an electrical arc would be formed between the base metal and the electrode. For completing the circuit, you have to run the work lead from the welder to the base metal. This can be done by attaching the ground clamp to the piece of metal you are working on as close to the weld as possible.

Introduction about welding accessories

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Welding is a process of joining metals, to join these metals the basic need of a welder is welding guns and torches. They are the light to welding industries and a basic accessory in welding process. Welding torches have the connections for the gas to flow through which flame forms and it is used to weld the metals. Welding gun has a number of key parts such as control switch, gas nozzle, and power cable and it consists of nozzle in which shielding gas flows and the torch is used to produce the flames. The welding guns and torches should have the facilities of extension of wires and the Spool guns are the guns which allow easy access and change out of wire in seconds. Plasma cutting torches is used to cut the metals and it is similar to welding torches, but can be easily identified. The plasma torch generates the plasma, which flow from it nozzles and each of the welding process has its own accessories and the welder should have a great control on handling these accessories.

Steps in steel welding

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Steel is basically a metal alloy that primarily consists of iron. It has carbon content between 0.2 and 2.04 percent. As the carbon content increases, it becomes harder and stronger but brittle. However other elements also affect its physical properties. For an effective welding, the composition of steel must be determined.

Before you start welding, you need to determine the weldability of the steel. Usually steels with fewer alloying agents are more weldable. You also need to measure the equivalent carbon content of different alloys of steel. This is because carbon has the greatest effect on steel’s weldability. Copper and nickel has the least effect on steel.

If possible try to use high strength, low alloy steel specifically developed for welding process. There is always a chance to swap strength and weldability. It is generally a bit difficult to weld stainless steel. Even though they are most weldable, they are prone to distortion owing to the high thermal expansion. Control the amount of ferrite in the weld to minimize hot cracking. It is safe to use an electrode that deposits a weld metal with a small amount of ferrite. For welding other types of stainless steels, you need to preheat and use special electrodes.

Welding helmet and it uses:

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Welding is not just joining two metals but it is a trade which requires lot of training and practice. Along with training you also need to perform this task accurately and safely. This in fact can be really very dangerous task. So considering all the facts it is necessary to protect yourself by wearing welding helmet. Welding helmet is beneficial because these protect mainly your eyes from ultra rays and flames of harmful gas.

There are many kinds of helmet available in the market. The most useful helmet is the auto darkening helmet. Here you don’t have to change the lens of shades often. It automatically darkens during the welding process. The most import part in welding helmet is the gasket. This is seen between the outer cover lens and filter lens. The property of gasket is that they are heat resisting lens which protects from the heat of welding. When you shop for helmet see that it is light weight and comfortable while wearing.

Short note on spot welding:

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

There are many kinds of welding such as Mig welder, Tig welder, Arc welder and many others. You can also find few resistances welding such as spot welding. Spot welding is mostly used for welding sheet metal fabricators. It is a process of touching the surface of metals by heat which is joined with another metal where the heat is generated from electric flow to resistance.

These welding are one of the oldest and were known as projection welding. These are very useful while welding for thin foils. These are energy efficient and also can weld in high speed. This welding equipment has an ease of automation and are very easy to handle. These are used for many kinds of applicators such as automobile industry, orthodontist and many other industries. You can spot weld the aluminum alloy with the use of powerful welding transformer. This is very useful for welding the sheet metal for cars and can weld automatic with the help of robot. These are also utilized for joining the cells of batteries with nickel straps. The battery might get hot while soldering but nothing will happen if you use spot welding.

How are Diesel Generators beneficial?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

People are using diesel generators since 150 years. These are very useful for commercial industries and residence. The purpose of these generators is withdrawing chemical energy from diesel and producing kinetic energy. You can also produce electrical energy by converting diesel energy with induction. These are known as the back up for electricity. These are generally preferred by the automobile companies because it gives high mileage. One can be benefited if they use diesel generators instead of gasoline.

Benefits of diesel generators:

* These are comparatively inexpensive than gasoline and are suitable in all kinds of industries.

* This use diesel which is available in all the corner of the world.

Know more about Tig welders:

Monday, July 19th, 2010

The style of Tig welding requires heat and tungsten electrodes for welding metals. These can join the metals without filler materials which are seen in other welding equipment. For shielding purpose this uses argon or other gas. Well these are slow than mig welder for joining metals. But these are known for its accuracy and high precision which is good for customized work. Unlike mig welder these require more skills and practice while welding. These have a possibility of preventing cracked seals or from damaging the weld. These have a safety options such as voltage protection and warning of code circuitry. These are also known as the best flexible welding equipment because it can blend all metals for welding purpose. These can also weld thick metals with the help of high amperage. One of the biggest merits of this welding equipment is the cleaning and purity of metal while welding. These melts the two metals together rather than joining two melted metals.

Five tips for buying welding helmets

Friday, July 16th, 2010

You can use the auto darkening welding helmets to protect yourself from infrared and ultraviolet rays. While you are planning to these welding helmets, consider a few things beforehand. Main considerations should be given for power, view screens and lens.

Power is the first thing that should be noted. The welding helmets may use batteries or solar power. The helmets suing batteries can be used at any time as mold as there is charge in batteries. Solar power helmets can only be used for outside application and not in dark places. Next you need to consider the view screen as it has the darkness level that protects your eyes form damaging light. Buy helmets with fixed darkening level if you are working with same type of metal always. Some designs can be darkened to various levels though.

The lens of the auto darkening welding helmet should also be noted. Consider the size of lens in the helmet as the leans should be large enough to give you adequate field of view while you are welding. Next check out the time that the helmets would take to darken after an arc has begun in order to protect the eyes from the damage.
